FLOWERS

Winner of a 2017 Knight Arts Challenge Award, “Flowers” is a contemporary dance-theatre show that pays homage to the art of ageing and dying. The theatrical allegory is inspired by two women who are nearing the end of their life and share a great love for flowers. Both women have lost their sense of reality to dementia (& Alzheimer's), and have unexpectedly discovered themselves navigating through their final days in an altered state of reality. Overcome with fear and confusion, both women turn to flowers to fill their ageing minds with comforting memories from the past, allowing them to surrender to the present.

CASK

“Cask” utilizes Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ as a way to sensationalize the dynamic and complex relationship between a victim and their abuser. The immersive show brings the audience deeper into the tormented mind and perspective of Montresor (who has confidently decided to murder Fortunato). “Cask” is never performed the same way twice... taking on a different artistic direction, stage setting and cast of dancers every time. Yet consistently, the two tradition characters [Montresor and Fortunato] are explored through a feminine embodiment of the roles. While three original characters have also been created, the Tenebris (latin for madness) , who act as the vexing voices inside of Montresor’s mind.

REBEL IN VENUS

Alma Dance Theater presents "Rebel In Venus", created by choreographer Marissa-Alma Nick; with an original soundtrack by composer Hope Littwin.

The theatrical and visual dance-opera shines a light on the powerful voice of the millennial generation and their response to the current #metoo and #timesup movements. The show is an uncensored conversation between girls about sex, selfies, yoni worshipping, discharge, assault, and boys.  This current and relevant performance enumerates dehumanizing sexual censorships for girls in America today through the lens of sex-positive feminism and attempts to redefine the iconic goddess figure known as Venus.

" This piece was originally inspired by a book "Healing Sex" by Staci Haines, which taught me how to heal myself of my own sexual traumas by liberating and re-claiming ownership of my sexuality. I've been working on this piece (and through my own traumas) for a few years and then #metoo took off, so it began to feel like being a part of something even bigger. “A Rebel In Venus” stands in solidarity with the all the girls and women marching right now for their voice and the freedom over their own bodies. In the end this dance demands that girls and women be seen as fully human, and most importantly: agents of our own sexuality.  " - Marissa Alma Nick
